Online survey to help tailor counselling for people taking APOE4 test

Researchers at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London are looking for particpants to complete a 15-minute questionnaire to help develop appropriate counselling tools for people taking an APOE4 gene test. They want to make sure the information is clear, respectful, and relevant by gathering opinions and perspectives from a range of people with a close interest in or experience of dementia.
READ-OUT celebrates its first year by recruiting the 500th participant

Alex McCreadie, a retired former soldier and health and safety professional, became the 500th participant in DPUK's #READ-OUT study. The study is evaluating the accuracy of tests diagnosing dementia to use in the NHS. He was recruited by ReMind UK in Bath, one of 21 sites already operating as part of the study. In 2026, 10 more locations will join the network, including sites as far north as Stornaway in the Outer Hebrides.

Novo Nordisk's EVOKE trial didn't meet its primary endpoint - semaglutide didn't slow cognitive decline in people with early Alzheimer's. But the results revealed something intriguing: reductions in biomarkers of neurodegeneration, inflammation, and tau protein. The drug does something to Alzheimer's biology - the question is when to use it.

READ-OUT study is accelerating innovation in digital cognitive assessments for dementia

DPUK is delighted to have received funding from Innovate UK through the Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Goals programme to add a digital dimension to its READ-OUT study. Dementia is the UK's biggest killer and around a million people in the UK have a form of the disease. 1 in 3 of them never get a formal diagnosis. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential to identify those who may benefit from new treatments that can slow down Alzheimer’s disease.

DPUK's READ-OUT study, part of the Blood Biomarker Challenge, has reached a major milestone with the commissioning of its 19th clinical site to the study. It now has half of its planned 30 sites operational, recruiting participants to the study.

Cost too high, benefit too small. No new drugs on the NHS

The NHS will not be offering patients two new drugs that slow progression of Alzheimer’s Disease following a decision by the regulator, NICE. They have assessed that donanemab and lecanemab provide only a small benefit which does not justify the high cost to the health service.

READ-OUT Study Progress: 8 UK Sites Now Open with More to Follow This Month

DPUK's READ-OUT project has reached a notable milestone with eight sites now actively recruiting participants across the UK, and several more centres set to open by the end of the month. This steady expansion represents important progress in improving dementia diagnosis through blood biomarker research.

A decade of DPUK research

Dementias Platform UK is ten years old. We launched in 2014 and have over the decade built an infrastructure which has enabled wide-ranging research and brought together a collaborative community in dementia research. During the 2024 Clinical Trials on Alzheimer's Disease (CTAD) conference, Professor John Gallacher was reflecting on a decade of hard work by the large team past and present at DPUK.
