A group of people working on laptops at a DPUK datathon.

DPUK's Advanced Academy is an annual, 5-day virtual event with online presentations, lectures and guided tutorials, group collaborations and hands-on big data exercises aimed at helping researchers enhance their data science skillsets.

Our next academy will be in Autumn 2024.

If you are interested in our training, email us your details and we will make sure you hear first about the next academies.

This course is for people with an existing background in statistics or for people who have completed the Elementary Academy. It is equally suited to more experienced data analysts who want to expand their repertoire of cohort analysis techniques.

The course focuses on Longitudinal methods of Data Analysis using large cohorts in the DPUK portal.

Topics include:

  • Cox Regression
  • Survival Analysis
  • Machine Learning
  • Structural Equation Modelling

Day 5 of the week will be a consolidation day, applying some of the learning in a group analysis exercise.

This course uses various statistical packages e.g. R, Pythion and Stata. Basic teaching is provided.  Applicants should feel able to competently run and interpret linear and logistic regression analyses.

Participants work with cohort data in the DPUK Data Portal to learn new skills and work on real research projects. The Data Portal is a dementia-optimised health research data repository featuring 60 cohorts and over 3.5 million individual participants.

Each day of the event involves morning presentations and lectures on themed areas of dementia research and specific longitudinal cohort analysis techniques. Afternoon sessions allow participants to work on research projects using real-world data from cohorts in the DPUK Data Portal.

Teaching will be carried out using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) cohort.

DPUK's Autumn Academy complements the Elementary Academy, which is aimed at analysts new to working with data.
