DPUK has been awarded funding to investigate AI Risk Evaluation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used on complex health data in research and in clinical areas of medicine.

The research will be led by Lewis Hotchkiss & Prof. Simon Thompson at the University of Swansea with Prof. John Gallacher, Director of DPUK and Dr. Tim Rittman the University of Cambridge (QMIN MC)

As Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) Data Portal expands its repository with a growing collection of neuroimaging and genomics datasets, providing a rich multimodal resource for advancements in AI health research, DPUK are well-positioned to lead in establishing guidelines for addressing AI risks and mitigations within a Trusted Research Environment (TRE). TREs are designed to safeguard individual-level data while enabling researchers to conduct innovative analyses, with the evolving use of AI models for research and clinical analyses the regulation of AI requires careful consideration which is why DPUK is at the forefront of investment in this field.


Lewis Hotchkiss – “Data held within TREs offer huge potential for the use of AI to help with diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of diseases so it is crucial that we are able to unlock this potential. Nevertheless, it is imperative to ensure that we proceed in a secure manner, safeguarding the entrusted data to maintain its confidentiality and privacy. Examining ways to enable the development of AI on this data is crucial for facilitating this important research and I am very excited to work with each focus group to acquire their feedback which will support our work on guidelines in this area"

The research will be looking at issues in AI models which can be vulnerable to certain types of attack and data leakage. There is a need to carefully consider these risks and develop recommendations and guidelines to mitigate them.

The community group funding from DARE UK (Data and Research Analytics Environments UK) is for collaborative community-led initiatives highlighting the importance of working together towards common goals.
