This £150 million investment in dementia research for the first national Dementia Research Institute (DRI), led by the MRC, is warmly welcomed by the Dementias Platform UK (DPUK.)

The new investment will bring together world leading experts in discovery science to help tackle the estimated 850,000 people who live with the debilitating disease. This figure is expected to double over the next 20 years.

This welcome news will speed up the pace of research and development and link the investment already made by MRC through DPUK and NIHR translational activities alongside that of the dementia charities.

Professor John Savill, Chief Executive of the MRC said;

Dementias research is an extremely high priority for the Medical Research Council. We will work with our partners, and in particular with patients and their families, to build a vision for the UK Dementia Research Institute based on excellence in discovery science.

We want to attract world-class researchers with new and different perspectives so that we can make real progress in the race to discover the next wave of treatments for dementia”

DPUK is a £50 million public private partnership whose vision is to provide an integrated research environment enabling a new generation of highly targeted, highly informative, smaller and cheaper clinical trials, linking more closely cellular and molecular changes to patient selection and response. Within five years DPUK will have established world leading data sharing facilities, world leading research networks for imaging, stem cells and informatics, and systematic experimental medicine programmes focussing on synaptic health, inflammation and vascular risk.

Professor John Gallacher, Director from Dementia Platform also said;

“We are delighted with this new investment. It demonstrates the Government’s and MRC’s determination to address the problem of dementia. DPUK looks forward to working closely with the Dementia Research Institute.”
