People from African and Caribbean communities are underrepresented in dementia research. 'Your Beautiful Brain' is combatting this disparity by involving prominent African and Caribbean artists and dementia researchers working together to deliver art workshops for community members.

Dementias Platform UK are hosting art workshops to engage over-50s from African and Caribbean communities in dementia research and understanding.

The art workshop is a core part of the Your Beautiful Brain project, which received £23,000 in funding from Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Inspire Fund last year. This a partnership between DPUK, a dementia research programme based at the University of Oxford, and Feyi Raimi-Abraham, founder and CEO of the Black Dementia Company. The goal is to pilot the use of art as a vehicle to engage people from Black African and Caribbean backgrounds with dementia research and to increase understanding of brain health.

Recent research shows that people from white ethnic backgrounds are more likely to get involved in dementia research than people of other ethnicities. The consequence of this is that research outputs may not be representative of the wider population, so cannot directly be applied to people of different ethnicities. In real terms, this means worse long-term health outcomes for BIPOC communities. Your Beautiful Brain is combatting this disparity by involving prominent African and Caribbean artists and dementia researchers working together to deliver art workshops for community members.

When funding was awarded to this project last year, Feyi Raimi-Abraham said: ‘With the barriers to participation in dementia research that exist across communities in the UK – including African and Caribbean communities – initiatives like ‘Your Beautiful Brain’ provide much-needed opportunities for meaningful engagement with dementia researchers.’

All over 50s from African and Caribbean communities are very welcome, whether or not they have dementia, as well as their carers.
